Ekphrastic Writing with Kevin Basl (Veterans Virtual Workshop)

Ekphrastic Writing with Kevin Basl (Veterans Virtual Workshop)

Saturday, June 15th, 1pm-3:30pm

FREE, and for Veterans/Military Connected Persons Only

Every artwork tells a story--or many stories. This workshop will use visual art as inspiration for writing poetry and fiction, a technique known as "ekphrasis" (from the Greek term for "description"). Students will have the option to work from art of their choosing or to use paintings or prints selected by the facilitator. Two or more writing prompts will be given during the workshop, and students will have ample time for sharing their poetry or stories with the group for feedback and encouragement. All levels welcome!

All experience levels welcome!

About instructor Kevin Basl:

I write about veteran issues, U.S. militarism and art, often in the same piece. My perspective is significantly influenced by what I experienced as a soldier in the Iraq War, doing anti-war activism in the years after, and my upbringing in Western Pennsylvania's coal country.

Since 2012, I've facilitated many writing and art workshops for military veterans and others, with Warrior Writers and Frontline Arts. I've also taught writing at Temple University, where I completed my MFA in fiction.

RSVP Deadline Thursday, June 13th at midnight
